What to do About Yelling

Negative feelings can cause our heart rates to increase as we experience shallow breathing, while in “fight or flight” mode. Muscles can tighten up and  heart rates can increase. Breathing may become shallow and we may not be getting enough oxygen to our brains. Taking a “time out” or “cool down” is important when we feel these physiological cues to anger.  By slowing down our rate of breathing and taking deep breaths, our brains becomes oxygenated. This helps us to calm down and see things more clearly. This can also help to diffuse tense situations and prevent abusive behavior toward others. 

Expressing thoughts and feelings in a constructive, rather than destructive manner is also helpful. It is much better to discuss negative feelings and situations as they occur, rather than letting the “little things” build to explosive expressions of anger.


Using Humor to Reduce Stress

Stress causes us to go into survival mode, as we experience “fight or flight.”  Our muscles tense creating aches and pains,  and we can become cranky and irritable. Negative attitudes may cause others to withdraw and we may find ourselves alone,  in misery.

When we laugh, we are attractive to others. Our countenance improves. Tension is released, as our brains are flooded with endorphin - a natural pain-killing hormone. Laughter causes our brains to become  oxygenated, enabling us to see things more clearly and feel more refreshed and relaxed!

Humor is good for you. Use it daily!


Doing Things Together as a Family

Mealtime is a wonderful way for the family to enjoy time together. All family members can help by setting the table and preparing meals. Sitting and eating together enables the family to share experiences of the day, as well as planning for the activities of tomorrow.  Studies show that when the family eats home-cooked meals, more quality meals of higher nutritional value are consumed. This eliminates fast food intake and stomach ache, and contributes to happy, healthier families!

March 27th Event

On March 27th,  the City of Rowlett will be conducting the Annual Employee Health Fair at the Rowlett Community Centre. Licensed Professional Counselor Leslie Kuerbitz has been asked to participate as a community resource for employees.  Along with her husband Charlie Kuerbitz, a retired police officer, Leslie hopes to educate employees about relaxation and other forms of stress management, as well as providing suggestions for maintaining physical and emotional well-being.  Be sure to go to  Leslie’s website: www.lessstresswithles.com and check out her CD for relaxation!

Children Need Guidelines

Children need to know that they are loved and cared for by their parents.  Jennifer Pennifer and Mommy express love and affection for each other. Parents can help their children become more responsible by setting appropriate boundaries and letting their children know what is expected of them.
